Fashionable Ladies

Picked up my first Khmer fashion magazine since I've been in the Kingdom a little over a year now. Khmer fashion is an interesting one; it's a combination of traditional and contemporary. Maxi skirts, off-shoulder tops, puffy sleeves, bold prints, and platform pumps are all-the-rage here. Flipping through Ladies was a breath of fresh air - minimalist, stylish, two-toned ensembles greeted me page after page.

Every country/person has each a take on what they find fashionable or stylish. In the Philippines, for example, I would say we're greatly influenced by the American standards of fashion; from West Coast high-waisted denim cut-offs and midriff-bearing tops to the sleek and clean Upper East Side style - it's just a plethora of American fashion interpretations. So being taken from that and into a whole new perspective about what looks good, where more is less instead of the other way around, took me quite aback the first few weeks after my big move here. But in those weeks I have learned to appreciate that style is indeed a very personal matter; and that people shouldn't feel pressured to follow suit with what other people tell them is fashionable and whatnot.

In every phase in your life your take on fashion changes and your personal style changes along with it. It's an evolution, and I'd like to think of it as an adventure. You may prefer flats over heels or t-shirts to suits, and you may not be conventionally stylish, but so what? Personal style is all about feeling good inside and out, and putting on clothes that accentuate how you feel. This is me at home, feeling as comfortable as can be with no makeup on and in shorts and a sleeveless shirt - what's your everyday look?
